Slovenia PM pushes for construction of new nuclear reactor

LJUBLJANA – Slovenian Prime Minister Marjan Sarec threw his weight on Thursday behind a tentative plan to construct a brand new nuclear reactor to assist assist the nation’s financial development.

The federal government has not but made a ultimate choice on whether or not to construct a brand new reactor alongside Slovenia’s current and solely nuclear energy plant Krsko (NEK).

“We have now to place all our efforts into constructing the second block of the nuclear energy plant,” Sarec instructed reporters throughout a go to to NEK, stressing growing demand for electrical energy.

At current NEK, which is equally owned by Slovenia and Croatia, covers a couple of fifth of Slovenian electrical energy wants. In 2016 Slovenia and Croatia agreed to increase NEK’s lifespan by 20 years to 2043.

NEK was inbuilt cooperation with U.S. agency Westinghouse and began working in 1984. It was initially scheduled to shut in 2023.
